Strolling with berlinaut.

No metropolis has the one and only unique shop-till-you-drop street. But you can always find especially glamorous, unusual or traditional shopping venues.

Anyone strolling around Berlin open-eyed is bound to make their own discoveries in lots of streets. In Germany's capital, urban life doesn't only flow down well-worn paths.

And Berlin's stunning boulevards and broad sidewalks are an open invite to do the stroll.

Usually, it's a Saturday thing. From 11am punctually (well, we are in Germany!) the streets around Kollwitzplatz are buzzing. Car drivers, pumping with adrenalin, ready to do battle over parking spaces, if only they could find one; parents demonstratively wheeling buggies straight across the street; cyclists yelling traffic rules. And all of this just to mingle with three-deep rows of people shoving their way across a small piece of asphalt. Yes, Saturdays is market day at Kollwitzplatz.

Cult status is always one of those things. More often than not, what's really hip in Berlin remains the sweetest of secrets for the cognoscenti of cool. Maybe you do occasionally find a well-known political figure strolling around "Kolle" - but then Winterfeldtplatz can trumpet over its TV personalities. And if you really wanted just to go shopping, some less central districts may have better things on offer.

But Kollwitzplatz market is a stage: new products, new ideas – direct, fresh and tasty, directly from the manufacturer. Take that old Berlin traditional snack - currywürst. The sausage is good but the sauce ... mouthwatering! Or the little mini-quiches, just baked, every one reason enough to give in to temptation. Fantastic bunches of flowers, stylishly and imaginatively arranged. Even lamp designers have been spotted offering their wares at the Kollewitzplatz market...

And if it's not Saturday, this corner of Prenzlauer Berg still has its own unique street vibe with the right mix of small cafés and new businesses. Whoever's made it into one of the sought after shops along Kollwitzstrasse, Knaackstrasse, or Wörther Strasse can claim to be just that far away from successfully setting up their own business (or successfully transferring a west business model into east Berlin). Interesting and must-see sights around Kollwitzplatz: berlinaut. Clicking the city. Addressing the metropolis.

>>> Kreuzberg, Bergmannstrasse

Berlinaut.de

In the days when West Berlin was young, and Kreuzberg still the wildest west, Bergmannstrasse was the ultimate must-see and must-be venue. Where Bavarians bought vinyl on their way through town, or West German students tried out the right gear and the nightlife in the area locals call Kreuzberg 61. Nowadays, the quarter around the Marheinekeplatz is older and wiser – just like its residents.

>>>

Today's Bergmannstrasse has a cozily alternative feel. When the sun shines (and it nearly always does in what's called summer in Berlin), this part of Kreuzberg becomes a Mediterranean urban landscape. And the Mediterranean bit is meant seriously – a touch of Morocco, lots of Italy, Greece and Turkey as peaceful neighbors, a French lifestyle – well, the Berliner is at home all over the world...

Four good Bergmanstrasse reasons - 1. go out; 2. do the tasty fast snack or indulge in the gourmet meal; 3. go shopping, 4. find service providers. And around Bergmannstrasse, as so often in Berlin, you find the obvious – and the not so obvious. The rents are low in the side streets or the back courtyards. Space for producers, inventors, and idealists.

Anyone looking out for what the streets have to offer in this Kiez (almost) immediately finds outlets and designers with the weirdest fashions, loveliest jewelry, and most stylish accessories. But Bergmannstrasse is not Munich. In other words, the shop windows are smaller, sometimes dusty and occasionally in the cellar. Find out more – before: berlinaut. Clicking the city.
